Pergamon Ancient City Trip

The ancient city, which was the capital of the Kingdom of Pergamon in 283-133 b.c, was one of the most magnificent places of the Hellenistic Period. The ancient city, consisting of royal palaces, streets, social and commercial spaces, library, fountains, theater and waterways, takes you on a small journey in history. Well, did you wonder where the name Pergamon comes from? We were very curious and said, let’s learn what it meant. Pergamon actually derives from the name Perg and means castle in Turkish. It was translated into Turkish as Bergama.

The two words are very similar to each other anyway. The story of Philetairos, which began with the establishment of the kingdom in 283 BC, ended in 133 BC when it was under the auspices of the Roman Empire. However, in its 150 years of existence, it was one of the most powerful kingdoms of the period in terms of politics, culture and economy. As we mentioned before, The city came under Roman rule in 133 b.c. But, it didn’t happen with a war. It was realized upon the will of Attalos, the last king of Pergamon. After being a part of the Roman Empire, it continued as the capital of the Asian province of the empire. As the Roman Empire weakened and lost its influence in the 8th century A.D., the city was surrounded by the Arabs. As of the 14th century, the ancient city came under Turkish rule.

Pergamon Library

So, why do you say Pergamon is so famous? Because there is a very different residential architecture and urban planning compared to that period. The ancient city, which was built on a steep hill, was formed from two sides, as the lower and upper city, as it can be understood from its position that the name Pergamon, meaning castle, was used. In the upper part of the city, there are the king’s palaces, Athena Temple, Traian Temple and Pergamon library. In the meantime, a footnote should be made immediately. Because the Pergamon library is the most famous and important library of the ancient period. It was home to 200 thousand volumes of work inside. Anyway, if we go back to our topic, you will understand that the upper city part appeals to the elite class of the period. In the lower city, there were houses, agora, shops and holy shrines.

Zeus Altar, Zeus and Athena reliefs, Apollo, Artemis, Leto, Poseidon, Amphitrite and Nereus reliefs are also among the factors that make the ancient city famous. Again, its theater was among the most important theaters of the period. It is a huge 10 thousand-seat theater. Considering the conditions of that period, building such a structure is really impressive.

Bergama Ancient City was included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List in 2014.

Pergamon Altar of Zeus

Besides being one of the most impressive buildings in the ancient city of Bergama, it is considered as the most magnificent Zeus Altar in the world. But unfortunately, one of the ancient artifacts brought from Anatolia is still itself. It is thought that the Zeus Altar was smuggled to Germany during the reign of Sultan Hamid. Also known as the Bergama Altar, the building is located in Berlin. In fact, the altar is so majestic, large and magnificent that a special museum was built in the Zeus Altar because it could not fit in any museum.

The altar is was built by Eumenes II in 180 b.c and has a sacred / religious feature. There are god and goddess reliefs such as Athena, Zeus, Artemis and Leto on the altar.
