History of Bodrum

Dorians from coming to Greece called Halikarnassos here after establishing their colonies at the campus previously known as Alosokarnoso. The founder of the city, Anthes, is also a semi-mythological figure. The city came under Persian rule centuries later. It had one of the seven wonders of the world, Mausoleum. Halikarnassos mausoleum was built in memory of an administrator in the region and later ruined due to external factors.

The name of the city is thought to have emerged as Bodrum in time because it was later called “Petrium” in the name of Saint Peter. So there is no connection between the basement and the Bodrum its Turkish meaning.

Bodrum is also famous for its unique local architecture. This local, old architecture seen in neighborhoods and villages such as Yeniköy, Eski Çeşme, Tepecik, Çarşı, Kumbahçe offers a quite different experience for the visitors. These constructions are very similar to the architectural culture on the Greek islands. It is immediately noticeable with its white painted walls, blue-painted doors, and windows. Architectural historians divide these houses into four types. These four types generally depend on the size and geometric shape of the house. It is divided into a Musandıralı, Chios type, Tower, and Levantine houses.

In addition to these, it is thought to be preferred the white color for the region’s climate and spaciousness. Also, the blue color and the basil placed around the house are thought to be related to keeping snakes and scorpions away.
