History of It

The first Turkish archaeologist, Osman Hamdi Bey, was appointed as the director of Istanbul Archeology Museums in 1881, and with this appointment, the doors of a new era in Turkish museology are opened. Studies are carried out by Osman Hamdi Bey in many necropolises and temples such as Mount Nemrud, Myrina, Kyme. He made excavations in Sidon between 1887-1888. As a result of these excavations, he reached the King Necropolis in Sidon and brought many historical artifacts such as the world-famous Alexander Tomb to Istanbul.

Istanbul Archaeological Museums Complex

The oldest building in the Istanbul Archeology Museums is the Tiled Pavilion, built-in 1472. Tiled Pavilion is also known as Sırça Palace and Kasr-ı Kâşi. It was built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. The most important feature of the Tiled Pavilion is that it is the only example of Ottoman civil architecture in Istanbul. Today, Turkish tile and ceramic artworks are exhibited here.

The Old Eastern Works Museum was founded by Osman Hamdi Bey in 1883 as the School of Fine Arts. We can say that this place was built with the aim of a kind of Fine Arts Academy.
